Vikas Barala, the son of Haryana Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subhash Barala, and Ashish Kumar, both accused of stalking and attempting to kidnap a 29-year-old woman in Chandigarh, were denied bail today.
The two men had allegedly stalked and tried to abduct Varnika Kundu, the daughter of a former IAS officer, on the streets of Chandigarh earlier this month in a case that attracted national headlines.
Vikas and Ashish, were initially arrested hours after the August 4 midnight incident. However, they were soon let out on bail by the Chandigarh Police, which, in a controversial move, dropped serious and non-bailable charges of kidnapping against the two men.
However, they were arrested again on August 9 after the charges were restored.
Both were booked under non-bailable offences, including attempt to abduct Kundu, under Section 365 (kidnapping or abduction with intent to confine person) and Section 511 (attempt to commit offence punishable with life imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code.
Kundu, 29, daughter of Haryana Additional Chief Secretary V.S. Kundu, had complained to police that the two accused, who were drunk, had stalked and intimidated her and tried to abduct her on August 4-5 night.
Vikas and Ashish have denied that they intended to abduct the woman, who is a disc jockey.
